The Manning Valley Race Club is a relatively new organisation having been launched on Thursday 4th January 2018, although in the late 19th century the Manning River Jockey Club organised races at Taree. The earliest record of results from a meeting organised by the Manning River Jockey Club was on Monday 24th May 1886 when the card contained such races as the Royal Cup and Birthday Cup. However, even before this meeting races were being staged regularly in Taree, with one such meeting taking place on Tuesday 30th March 1880 when the track was almost waterlogged, the nearby rivers being swollen by the torrential rain. In the event all races were won by Manning River horses, at the expense of Port Macquarie horses which were all unplaced. |

The Jockey Club was still operation well into the 20th century, with the highlight of its meetings at that point being the Town Plate. |

Today the Valley Race Club stages its races at the Bushland Drive Racecourse in Taree, a New South Wales town on the Mid North Coast. The original Aboriginal inhabitants in the area encountered European settlers in 1831 led by William Wynter. Today the town has a population in excess of 26,000 and is able to offer a full programme of races throughout the year. However, the principal race of the Manning Valley Race Club is the Harrington Handicap Cup over 1300 metres which has been contested in the first week of January in each of the last two years. |
